Gary Player Once Said Tom Watson Should Be Stripped of 1977 Masters and Open Titles

In his 1991 book To Be The Best, Player claimed Watson’s 1977 Masters and Open wins should be voided because his Ram irons exceeded USGA groove limits. Player wrote, “I’d hate to have won majors using illegally grooved clubs.” Ironically, he used the same model himself. Watson refused to comment, saying, “Not the time or place.”
