"The media in that time was fan boys. There was no negativity in the early 80s, 90s. The game was glorified," Gilbert said. He noted nobody discussed MJ's poor shooting in the '92 Olympics: "We didn't hear struggling. You believe he actually performed well in '92 because we weren't told nothing bad." Paul Pierce: Early 2000s NBA Had "Way More Aura" Than Today
"Players in the early 2000s were way more exciting to watch than now. The celebrity was bigger," Pierce said. He argued today's stars lack that magnetism: "It's still the old heads Steph and LeBron. Wemby got some aura but the average fan isn't watching Wemby, Joker." Pierce cited Iverson, McGrady, Vince, Kobe, Shaq and KG as must-watch players.
