New research from Harvard University shows suicide rates among former NFL players surged after 2011. The rate reached 2.6 times that of retired MLB and NBA athletes. Researchers cite fears surrounding CTE, social isolation, and untreated conditions such as sleep apnea and chronic pain. They have urged better screening and improved mental health support, especially for Black former players.
