How James Naismith’s Named His Game ‘Basketball’
Naismith recalled that after Christmas break in 1891, YMCA student Frank Mahan asked what to call the new game. Mahan first suggested “Naismith-ball,” but Naismith laughed: “That name would kill any game.” Mahan then proposed “Basket-ball.” Naismith agreed.” He later reflected he’d fulfilled YMCA's physical education trainer Gulick’s task to interest the class in exercise and invent a new game.
