Mike Rizzo Recalls Nationals’ Deferred Deal for Max Scherzer

Rizzo said Washington “were called desperate” for deferred contracts before the Dodgers drew praise for similar structures. In a joking exchange, he revisited Scherzer’s seven-year, $210 million deal, deferred over 14 years, and said the ace “earned every dime” by pitching, performing and competing at that level, after the contract helped the Nationals win the World Series title.
