O’Neal said West’s death “touched my heart” and pledged to cover funeral expenses after the 12-year-old suffered a severe brain injury in a March 5 fight near Mason Creek Middle School. Serving as Henry County Sheriff’s Office chief of community relations, Shaq said, “No parent should ever have to bury their child,” while officials urged support for West’s family.
