Smith said Miami (Ohio) justified its NCAA bid by beating SMU 89-79 after an undefeated regular season. “This wasn’t an upset,” he said, backing the RedHawks’ own message. Miami outscored SMU by 33 points from three, and Smith argued a team that went unbeaten before March should never have needed to fight doubters just to get in.

Duke's Maliq Brown even admitted at halftime that Duke underestimated Siena, saying, "We thought it was going to be a cakewalk going into this game."
