Why the NFL Calls It the “Wild Card Round”

The NFL uses the term “wild card” to describe playoff teams that qualify without winning their division. These teams earn postseason spots by finishing with the best remaining records in each conference, regardless of division. The opening playoff weekend is called the Wild Card Round because it features these teams, with three per conference in the current 14-team format.
